Lessons of 1 to 2 hours can be arranged by our professional language consultants on a wide variety of traditional and contemporary topics. If you would like to arrange a lesson on topics other than those listed below, please contact us and we will try to accommodate your needs.

Annual events in Japan

Students learn about the historical and socio-cultural background of annual events in Japan and experience related activities such as traditional toys and games for Oshoogatsu (New Year’s day), designing Ohanami lunch boxes using Australian ingredients, Obon and Bon odori dancing. 90 mins (minimum)
Ekiben  
Students explore the historical background and features of Ekiben and regional food culture in Japan. Students then make their own travel plans to buy Ekiben in Japan. (Optional extra: students design special Australian Ekiben, create a sales pitch engage in a role-play of selling and buying Ekiben) 90 mins (minimum)
Tadoku 2 (Trial)  
workshop  
This workshop provides students an easy and fun reading experience in Japanese. A basic and simple explanation of Tadoku is held at the beginning of the workshop. Students read graded/guided readers in Japanese in their own pace based on their interests and proficiency level. 60 mins
Taiko: learning Japanese through rhythm Students learn about Japanese drums and practice drumming with Japanese phrases and expressions. Through this practice, students can familiarise themselves with haku (拍(はく)) or mora, which helps them to develop their pronunciation and orthography skills. 60 mins (minimum)
Furoshiki and Japanese wrapping Students learn about traditional Japanese furoshiki culture; and practice traditional wrapping. (Optional extra: shopping role-play) 60 mins (minimum)
Yukata and bon-odori

Students learn about the religious background of obon and traditional activities; and perform bon-odori wearing yukata and folding it. 90 mins (minimum)
Shodo and Kanji
4
Students learn the basic techniques of shodo; and create their own work. (Optional extra: basic kanji) 90 mins (minimum)
Visiting a Japanese house Students learn manners and expressions for visiting a Japanese house; and perform a role-play. 60 mins (minimum)
Konbini shopping Students familiarise themselves with Japanese konbini items and services; and learn expressions for shopping by role-playing. 60 mins (minimum)
Obento shopping Students explore traditional obento culture in Japan; learn expressions for buying obento through role-play; and create their own special obento. 90 mins (minimum)
Manga and anime Students explore genres and contemporary aspects of manga and anime in Japan; and create their own manga characters. 60 mins (minimum)
  Film viewing, 20 minute pre-viewing lesson and 40 minute post-viewing lesson based on the film’s themes, content and language.

1 Activities vary, depending on time of year.
2 Tadoku trial lesson is suitable for students who can read Hiragana and Katakana without difficulty. The lesson is recommended for students in Year 9 or higher. Please visit the site below for more information about Tadoku: http://tadoku.org/
3 Please note that, as we have limited number of Yukata (25 in total), large group may not have the chance to wear Yukata individually.
